Passing Along Your Hand Skills

(Maddy Lou)

Dottie directed me to a wonderful post about the importance of passing along our hand sewing and other skills. Giving the Gift of Hand Skills at Craft Nectar (by Weeks Ringle of Fun Quilts) suggests a new tradition of sharing a hand skill with a child or young adult. Dottie also mentioned this as a possible New Year’s resolution. Weeks provides examples of how surgeons would benefit from improved fine motor skills, and that texting and using a computer mouse are not helping to develop these skills. I recommend a quick visit to Weeks’ blog to read the short article.

Who are you passing your skills to?

Welcome 2011

Happy New Year to all! Did you make it ’til midnight? I spent New Year’s Eve in a Twitter party sponsored by Stitchin’ Heaven and won two quilt items! A 5-pack of Aurifil thread and a membership to The Quilt Show website (Alex Anderson and Ricky Times). It was so fun meeting new quilters, and watching the New Year arrive through the night in different timezones.

While participating in the chat, a couple of questions were posed and I’d love to know your comments.

  1. What’s the first project on your 2011 plan? Mine is to finish some charity quilts.
  2. What new technique would you like to learn this year? Your comments might also give some ideas to Carollee in arranging for new speakers! I think mine would be applique techniques to improve my skills.

I hope that 2011 is off to a good start for you, and wish you a wonderful new year!
